Invented in 1829 by Sir Charles Wheatstone, the concertina was a popular instrument in the later half of the 19th century. While there are in reality several types of concertina, we can distinguish two main variants of the instrument: the English concertina and Anglo German concertina, commonly referred to as “Anglo”. While it fell out of favor during the 20th century, the concertina has benefited from a regain of interest during the 1960s folk revival movement. It also remained a popular instrument in traditional Irish music. Today, the concertina has a small but enthusiastic community of players who keep the spirit of the concertina alive.
